I learn a lot from my dying clients, especially the women. They have such wisdom to share. And I’m noticing a pattern with those who came of age in the 1960s and in the lessons they teach before they go.
It’s no secret that this world often overlooks women when we enter middle age. At the same time, a curious paradox emerges: some of us get bolder.
In fact, some of our country’s most inspirational and fearless activists have been women in their forties, fifties, and beyond. As we begin to feel overlooked by the systems we seek to challenge, that invisibility can be our greatest weapon.
I taught high school history for over ten years. I also worked as a progressive political organizer for over three decades. Now I’m caring for women at the end of their lives who urge me to continue kicking some ass.
Blame it on that, our current regime, or menopause, but I’m getting more militant as I get older.
And I’m in good company.
